RIO DE JANEIRO, Jun. 25, 1950 (AMP) — Brazil 50 : England defeated Chile by a score of 2-0 (halftime: 1-0), in a World Cup group stage game on Sunday afternoon at the Maracanã Stadium in Rio de Janeiro.
England dominated the first half thanks to a goal scored by forward Stan Mortensen in the 27th minute. Leading 1-0 at the break, the Englishs further widened their lead in the second period with a goal by Mannion in the 51st minute.
The result put the English second in Group 2 with 2 points. In their next game, England will meet third-placed the United States at the Maracanã Stadium on June 29, while Chile will face Spain.
