USSR beats Uruguay to reach World Cup quarterfinals
ARICA, Jun. 6, 1962 (AMP) — Chile 62 : USSR defeated Uruguay by a score of 2-1 (halftime: 1-0), in a World Cup group stage game on Wednesday afternoon at the Carlos Dittborn Stadium in Arica.
USSR dominated the first half thanks to a goal scored by forward Aleksei Mamykin in the 38th minute. Leading 1-0 at the break, the Soviets further widened their lead in the second period with a goal by Ivanov with one minute left in regular time.
