Hungary beats Bulgaria to reach World Cup quarterfinals
MANCHESTER, Jul. 20, 1966 (AMP) — England 66 : Hungary defeated Bulgaria by a score of 3-1 (halftime: 2-1), in a World Cup group stage game on Wednesday night at Old Trafford.
Bulgaria opened the score in the score in the 15th minute thanks to Georgi Asparuhov, before Hungary regained the advantage with Davidov ('43 own) and Mészöly ('45). Leading 2-1 at the break, the Hungarians further widened their lead in the second period with a goal by Bene in the 54th minute.
