MALAGA, Jun. 19, 1982 (AMP) — Spain 82 : USSR defeated New Zealand by a score of 3-0 (halftime: 1-0), in a World Cup group stage game on Saturday night at La Rosaleda Stadium in Malaga.
USSR dominated the first half thanks to a goal scored by midfielder Yuri Gavrilov in the 25th minute. Leading 1-0 at the break, the Soviets further widened their lead in the second period by scoring twice (Blokhin '48 and Baltacha '69).
The result put the Soviet second in Group F with 2 points. New Zealand is bottom with no points. In their last game, USSR will meet third-placed Scotland at La Rosaleda Stadium on June 22, while New Zealand will face Brazil.
