PONTIAC, Jun. 22, 1994 (AMP) — USA 94 : Switzerland defeated Romania by a score of 4-1 (halftime: 1-1), in a World Cup group stage game on Wednesday afternoon at the Silverdome in Pontiac.
Adrian Knup scored dual goals
Swiss midfielder Alain Sutter opened the score in the 16th minute, before seeing Romania catch up in the 35th minute thanks to Gheorghe Hagi. 1-1 at half time. The Swisss eventually won the game in the second period with three more goals by Chapuisat ('52) and Knup ('65, '72).
The result put the Swiss top of Group A with 4 points. Romania is second with 3 points. In their last game, Switzerland will meet Colombia at the Silverdome on June 26, while Romania will face the United States.
