BORDEAUX, Jun. 20, 1998 (AMP) — France 98 : Belgium tied 2-2 with Mexico (halftime: 1-0), in a World Cup group stage game on Saturday afternoon at the Stade Chaban Delmas in Bordeaux.
The Belgians started off well by taking the lead thanks to Belgian forward Marc Wilmots in the 43rd minute. However, even though they were leading 1-0 at half time, and despite Wilmots goal ('47) in the second period, they could not prevent a comeback by Mexico with goals by Alberto García Aspe ('55 on penalty) and Cuauhtémoc Blanco ('62).
The result put the Mexicans top of Group E with 4 points. Belgium is second with 2 points. In their last game, Mexico will meet third-placed the Netherlands at the Stade Chaban Delmas on June 25, while Belgium will face South Korea.
