MARSEILLE, Jun. 20, 1998 (AMP) — France 98 : The Netherlands defeated South Korea by a big score of 5-0 (halftime: 2-0), in a World Cup group stage game on Saturday night at the Stade Vélodrome in Marseille.
The Netherlands dominated the first half thanks to goals from Cocu ('38) and Overmars ('42). Leading 2-0 at the break, the Dutchs further widened their lead in the second period by scoring three times (Bergkamp '71, Pierre van Hooijdonk '80 and Ronald de Boer '83).
The result put the Dutch top of Group E with 4 points. South Korea is bottom with no points. In their last game, the Netherlands will meet second-placed Mexico at the Stade Vélodrome on June 25, while South Korea will face Belgium.
