LYON, Jun. 21, 1998 (AMP) — France 98 : Iran defeated the United States by a score of 2-1 (halftime: 1-0), in a World Cup group stage game on Sunday night at the Stade de Gerland in Lyon.
Iran dominated the first half thanks to a goal scored by midfielder Hamid Estili in the 40th minute. Leading 1-0 at the break, the Iranians further widened their lead in the second period with a goal by Mahdavikia with just 6 minutes remaining in regulation time.
The result put the Iranians third in Group F with 3 points. USA is bottom with no points. In their last game, Iran will meet group leaders Germany at the Stade de Gerland on June 25, while the United States will face Yugoslavia.
