SUWON, Jun. 5, 2002 (AMP) — Korea Japan 2002 : The United States defeated Portugal by a score of 3-2 (halftime: 3-1), in a World Cup group stage game on Wednesday night at the Suwon World Cup Stadium.
The United States dominated the first half thanks to goals from O'Brien ('4), Costa ('29 own) and McBride ('36). Leading 3-1 at the break, the Americans further widened their lead in the second period with a goal by in the th minute.
The result put the Americans second in Group D with 3 points. In their next game, the United States will meet group leaders South Korea at the Suwon World Cup Stadium on June 10, while Portugal will face Poland.
