World Cup 1950 : Uruguay draw 2-2 with Spain
SãO PAULO, Jul. 9, 1950 (AMP) — Brazil 50 : Uruguay tied 2-2 with Spain (halftime: 1-2), in a World Cup second round game (Final Round Group) on Sunday afternoon at the Pacaembu Stadium.
The Spaniards started off well by taking the lead thanks to goals by Basora ('37, '39) while the Uruguayans only scored once Ghiggia ('29). However, even though they were leading 2-1 at half time, they could not prevent a comeback by Uruguay with a saving goal from Uruguayan midfielder Obdulio Varela in the 73rd minute.
The result left both teams tied in the second place of the group with one point. In their next game, Spain will meet group leaders Brazil at the Pacaembu Stadium on July 13, while Uruguay will face Sweden.
