World Cup 1950 : Brazil hold Switzerland to 2-2
SãO PAULO, Jun. 28, 1950 (AMP) — Brazil 50 : Brazil tied 2-2 with Switzerland (halftime: 2-1), in a World Cup group stage game on Wednesday afternoon at the Pacaembu Stadium.
The Brazilians started off well by taking the lead thanks to goals by Alfredo ('3) and Baltazar ('32) while the Swisss only scored once Fatton ('17). However, even though they were leading 2-1 at half time, they could not prevent a comeback by Switzerland with a saving goal from Swiss forward Jacques Fatton in the 88th minute.
The result put the Brazilians top of Group 1 with 3 points. Switzerland is third with one point. In their last game, Brazil will meet second-placed Yugoslavia at the Pacaembu Stadium on July 1, while Switzerland will face Mexico.
